Finishing off a basement is a lot like building a house. Most of the
basements we work on include bathrooms, cabinetry, and custom trim
packages. The biggest challenge that the homeowner will face is making
important decisions in regards to the design options. There are many
that we have worked with that enjoy picking up tile samples or carpet
samples. The clients that enjoy this process usually do a pretty good
job of picking everything out. For the average homeowner, it can be more
of a project than initially anticipated. As a contractor, we get very
excited during the final stages of a basement finish. Applying the
paint, installing the tile, staining the cabinets, granite install, and
backsplash layout all have a major role in how a basement comes out. If
you get just one of these elements wrong, it can ruin the entire finish.
This is why KC Home Creations recommends using a designer to assist in
these decisions.
Another thing to consider about finishing your basement is
understanding and maintaining a budget for your project. Estimates for
finishing basements are usually all across the board. If you receive an
estimate that seems to good to be true, it may not include some of the
materials necessary to complete the project. Instead of presenting these
items from the start, some contractors will give you a low number just
to get their foot in the door. Once a project has already started, it
becomes much less favorable to negotiate additional items or task that
are required for your project. Working with a contractor that provides a
complete package will save you money and headaches in the long run.
